Once a year Dash's preschool requires parents to come in and teach the children about their profession. Today, our number was up. Being a school teacher we feared the children would be confused and just think I was a substitute, lame. This left photography to share with the children. When we asked Dash what he wanted to do, he told us, "just talk about photos guys." Even at 3 years old, he knows AAron's job is so much cooler than mine! Sadly, AAron was caught up at work in Denver, so I -not the photographer- was left to tackle this alone. And luckily I was a hit! I started with the obvious, passing around different types of cameras to look at, I showed some of big daddy's amazing photos, and then we read a book that Dash and I had made about their holiday program using AAron's photos. All good, but then I brought out my secret weapon. I have taught lots of children, for lots of years and I know that if you want to be successful with the pre k crowd, you must always include something edible. Enter the "snack." I use the term snack, even though I should probably say sugar stack. Either way. The children and I made our own edible cameras using an ice cream bar for the body, an oreo as a lens, and a black nib for the clicker! Delicious and it actually looked like a camera. Success!
With teaching this lesson, I actually learned a few things myself; 1. There is absolutely nothing better than checking Linda at the door and for one entire hour being nothing other than "Dash's Mom." And #2. If you ever find yourself in this situation, do not get fancy, stick to the basics. Treats will always make you the most popular parent with the pre k crowd.
